Ride the Line

Listen to a Sample

we're riding our ponies on the railroad tracks
i say, "hey kate, don't look back until you
hear the whistle blow!"
then we race to the crossing where the red
lights flash
rein 'em in and let that dragon pass
let it roll on by
and we ride, we ride the line

at badger's creek, the boys hang out
drinking beer and fishing for trout
and they call out as we gallop by
i know everyone in the whole damn town
fifteen years old and i been around
across town lines
that natick boy's car sure does shine
when we ride, when we ride the line

we go downtown and steal a pack
of lucky strikes we smoke at the shack
by the graveyard wall
and if they catch us skipping school
it don't matter much 'cause we're leaving
town soon in the summer time
we'll head west and follow the highway signs
and we'll ride, we'll ride the line

and kate says, "hey, let's head for the pond
swim the ponies before the sun goes down"
it's cold and quiet
the ripples grow wide and they disappear
it makes me sad and it makes me scared
but i don't know why
it feels like i'm leaving something behind
when i ride, ride the line
